Easter raffle sees money raised for vital therapeutic initiatives at Meddyg Care

Meddyg Care is celebrating after a successful Easter raffle raised much needed funds to introduce new and interactive activities at its homes in Gwynedd.

These events are a key part of the care group’s annual programme, with bingo being another favourite, as it brings everyone together and encourages socialisation.

A total of £300 was made from the raffle, which has gone entirely towards the resident experience at the Porthmadog and Criccieth locations.

Kerry Thompson, the daughter of a resident, donated a two-foot-tall chocolate egg as one of the main prizes, which was gifted by Magna Specialist Confectioners Ltd.

She said:

“Rather than share the egg out between everyone, my sisters and I thought it would be a good idea to suggest that we raffle it off and raise money to buy something for my mom and the rest of the people at the home.”

Natasha Williams, family liaison officer and activities manager at Meddyg Care, said:

“Having the support from our residents’ loved ones is amazing, it’s their contribution and dedication that makes activities like this a huge success.”

New dementia dolls were at the top of the list for the care group, as they provide valuable therapy for some of the community.

Therapeutic Dementia Dolls

Recognising the soothing impact and the connection residents have to different development stages, Meddyg Care chose to buy newborn and nine-month-old dolls.

Noting the joy of previous beach trips and how some individuals gravitate towards shells and stones, Natasha sourced a sensory table with magnetic sand and toys.

Reflecting on the response to the new interactive activity, she explained:

“This was a successful purchase that has really kept people engaged and entertained.

“Due to the composition of the sand, residents can mould their hands around it, which helps with the effects of clenching, providing some respite from any discomfort due to a tightened grip.”

Providing a therapeutic outlet for individuals who enjoy arts and crafts, the money has also gone towards Aquapaint sets, designed specifically with dementia in mind.

Natasha continued:

‘‘We can spread some magic with these innovative canvases, as all you need is some water, and with every brushstroke, the colour appears on the sheet and creates a picture.

“They’re ideal, as once they dry, they can be used over and over again, so everyone has a chance to play with them.”

Natasha added:

“Our person-centred approach at the homes is complemented by alternative therapies like the dementia dolls or the magnetic sand and it’s fantastic to have the opportunity to find something for everyone.”

Therapeutic Activities for Dementia Care

Every individual is a high priority for Meddyg Care and access to these new initiatives facilitates deeper connection between the residents and the team.

Kerry reflected:

“My mom is at such a fantastic home and to see a smile on her face, along with everybody else, means more than words can say. Thank you to everyone who bought a ticket and helped us achieve our goal.”

Natasha commented:

“We plan to hold another raffle this summer, as well as other fun events, such as ice cream van visits and group walks for some fresh air and sun.

“Our Criccieth home is having its garden revamped, too and we hope to unveil it in the next few months.”
