Care home residents savour extra special performance

Meddyg Care residents were able to get themselves in the party spirit thanks to performer Eddie Martin.

Eddie entertained at both of Meddyg Care’s specialist dementia homes with Christmas classics, songs from the 50s rock ‘n’ roll era, the swinging sixties, and hits by Rat Pack favourites Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, and Bobby Darin.

And 58-year-old Eddie, who has been out on his own for nearly a decade after touring the country as part of a successful band, was thrilled to be able to bring some festive cheer to residents in the Porthmadog and Criccieth homes.

“Meddyg Care’s homes are absolutely fantastic,” said Eddie. “The care homes in Porthmadog and Criccieth are well-organised, well-run, and I was met by pleasant and happy staff.

“Whatever Meddyg Care is doing is working and nothing is too much trouble for the staff, whose only focus is on the residents and making sure they are looked after and entertained.

“It was a brilliant atmosphere; those that can stand up had a dance, with staff on hand to offer superb support, and everyone had a real good singsong.

“Watching the residents singing, dancing, or even mouthing the words is one of the special things about visiting the care homes.”

Natasha Evans, activities and fundraising manager for Meddyg Care, was equally pleased to be able to welcome Eddie to the Porthmadog and Criccieth care homes for their annual Christmas parties, which included themed games, a large buffet, and a non-alcoholic bar.

“It’s wonderful for us as a group to be able to put on these types of activities for the residents, who thoroughly enjoyed having Eddie sing for them,” said Natasha.

“We do regular sing-a-longs by performers who visit our homes and plan for these to be done outside when the weather improves, as well as other activities like arts and crafts, flower arranging, baking, word games and quizzes.

“There is a power to music that allows residents to reconnect with former memories. It really opened a box for the residents with many singing along, tapping their feet and dancing, with or without help.

“It was heart-warming seeing the residents so energetic and still chatting about Eddie’s visit six hours later.

“What was great is that Eddie did a wide variety of songs from across the decades and some Christmas tunes to get everyone in the festive spirit.”

Eddie’s visit comes quick on the heels of the installation of new facilities at the Porthmadog home.

Meddyg Care has recreated a traditional lounge bar – similar to the amenities at their Criccieth home – and added new garden facilities to allow for family gatherings to take place on the site’s grounds.

The home’s pub, named the Glaslyn Arms after the estuary which runs alongside Porthmadog, allows residents to enjoy alcohol-free beers, wines, ciders, and spirits, while also taking in occasions such as sporting events and pub quizzes.
